Hey, Laura Petrie!
By Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, LD/N
Did you ever watch the Dick Van Dyke show? I was a big fan. I loved Rob, Buddy,
Sally, Allen Brady, and of course Rob's adorable wife, Laura. Yesterday, I had a
"Laura Petrie moment" that I wish hadn't happened. Remember the episode in which
Rob, Laura's comedy-writing husband, had a large box delivered to their home? He
was writing a skit about temptation and wanted to see if a suburban wife could
resist opening a mysterious package addressed to her husband. Laura accepted it
from the delivery man, pretended to ignore it then gradually became drawn to its
hidden treasure. No one would know if she took a small peek inside, right? After
dancing around it and tugging at it, she finally opened it just enough to cause
its contents, a huge, self-inflating raft, to quickly expand into the room.
Yesterday, I received my mystery delivery from a local dessert shop and my
"Laura Petrie intuition" drew me to it like a magnet. I opened the box just
enough to get a glimpse of is delectable bounty. It was filled with gourmet
chocolates, candy bars, cookies, pretzels, and even an exotic jar of
raspberry-flavored honey mustard. As I examined each container, the voices in my
brain began to argue:
"Come on. Take a bite!"
"…No, this is bad for you!"
"These chocolates look amazing. They must be delicious!"
"…Toss this out right now!
The evil voice won the battle and I began to nibble each and every
carbohydrate-filled, calorie-rich item. They were delicious, but now I feel so
guilty! What should we do when we are faced with unhealthy items that enter our
homes without our permission? How can we stay motivated to do what is best for
us in the face of temptation? Here are a few suggestions:
- Don't open the box! Toss it out
or give it away.
- Invite your family to help you
keep undesired foods out of your home. If your loved ones enjoy snacks that
you want to avoid, urge them to eat them away from home.
- When friends or business
associates want to send you a gift, suggest flowers or candles, not edible
treats.
Next time you turn away from a
temptation, reward yourself. Rent a movie, call a friend, or sit on the couch
and enjoy a few classic episodes of a favorite old television show. And if the
doorbell rings with a surprise package, beware! |
